Approximately a dozen Riverside employees supported the launch of the first of four GOES-R satellites, which launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on Saturday, November 19. Riverside supports the GOES-R satellite, the most advanced weather satellite ever built, with the ground systems to capture the high-volume data stream GOES-R will provide as well as the assimilation of GOES-R data into the improved analysis and forecast techniques, which will provide faster, more accurate weather forecasts and warnings.
This satellite is part of a $11 billion effort to revolutionize forecasting, save lives, and provide better environmental intelligence. This spacecraft will track U.S. weather, including hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, volcanic ash clouds, wildfires, lightning storms, and solar flares. GOES-R will churn out full images of the Western Hemisphere every 15 minutes and the continental United States every five minutes. Specific storm regions will be updated every 30 seconds.
