Elevating NOAA’s Mission:
Riverside’s Three-Decade Commitment to Environmental Intelligence
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) mission is science, service, and stewardship. They accomplish this through the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the ocean, atmosphere, and related ecosystems.
For nearly 40 years, Riverside has continuously supported NOAA with environmental intelligence to make critical decisions about life and property.
Technical Excellence in Earth Observation and Satellite Systems
Riverside’s technical support and engineering services play a pivotal role in assisting satellite development programs that leverage remote-sensing Earth observations. Our expertise extends across multiple areas, including notable contributions to NOAA’s Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR) supporting the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA).
One prime example is our collaboration with NOAA STAR JCSDA, where Riverside scientists and engineers have significantly shortened the time needed to utilize data from new satellite sensors. Additionally, our efforts have enhanced the Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) capability of the NOAA operational Global Forecast System (GFS) by improving the Global Statistical Interpolation (GSI) assimilation system. This includes supporting planning to exploit new passive microwave satellite sensors and assessing the impact on NWP forecast skill due to the potential loss of polar-orbiting satellite data.
